According to Bill Bryson, in 'Made in America', just half a century after the arrival of the pilgrms, Boston was 'filled with prostitutes', and Williamsburg, despite its modest size, contained three brothels "though curiously none of those have been incorporated into the sanatized replica community so poular with visitors today" as he observes.

13. It was possible for someone who was tired of monogomy to get rid of a tiresome spouse by means of an accusation of witchcraft. In 1651, when the wife of a Hugh Parsons of Springfield, Massachusetts, complained that her husband sometimes threw "pease about the howse and made me pick them up" and occasionaly in his sleep made "a gablings noyse" the town fathers saw at once that this was witchcraft and hanged him from the nearest gibbet.
