8. I doubt it. I dropped out of a doctoral program, and I found the people by and large to be uninteresting and not compatible. There were exceptions, those people are still my friends, but the whole environment was very betatizing and many of the women went outside the program to find a mate. I hate to be so blunt but I went to grad school with a lot of losers who were hiding from reality there. I am much happier, and better with women, out of that environment.

13. I’m thinking on getting a PHD at some point, probably at the same time my kids are going to be attending school, it sets a good example to see the mother whining about teachers like the will be :P .
14. But education here is so expensive and I will also need to get the kids through college. Is it worth it? I mean I know plenty of people with PHD that are not employed in the line with their expectations, specially economically?

23. Badger that can be understandable also… I went through some serious self reflection and development in my early 20s after being turned on to some ideas that I once didn’t consider. One of those main ideas was the idea of being well rounded across many fields. It was a huge clash with the specialization I knew I would be heading for if I were to have entered a PhD program. That PhD program would have been literature or philosophy, something along those lines, and we all know how the market for humanities PhD’s are these days, which is a huge gamble.

Now, unlike many people who kind of leave college and just go work an office job and live out their lives, I am still involved with the “academic” world and have taken quite a few classes over the years a la carte as an NDS student just for fun and the challenge. I’d rather spend my money on that rather than most material goods. I’m also fairly involved at a few literary magazines as contributor/editor. Not saying other people don’t do this, they do, but it is usually more goal oriented such as getting their MBA or doing some Oracle certification and not a life choice for further intellectual exploration.
25. I am merely describing my own situation, as it relates back to the topic, so possibly some other people have taken a similar path and can relate. There are other people with similar aspirations as me out there, certainly, but it is definitely hard finding them, especially as I get older and the dating circle winnows.
